Association of Jamaican Nurses – Greater Houston - Houston, Texas

The Association of Jamaican Nurses’ (AOJN), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in the Fall, 1998 for four Jamaican nurses who agreed that they should come together to embrace our heritage, network and provide assistance to the Jamaican. Since 1998, AOJN has awarded more than twenty-seven full nursing scholarships, provided community services and assistance after Hurricanes, provided support, accommodation for Jamaican patients receiving Humanitarian medical care in the Texas Medical Center and provided volunteers and collaborate with the Jamaica Foundation for the Houston International Festival.

The Austin Caribbean Cultural Exchange - Austin, Texas

The Austin Caribbean Cultural Exchange (ACCE) began in May of 2015 by a group of recent Austin transplants and longtime Austinites who were seeking a Caribbean community similar to the cities from which they relocated and similar to the community Austin once had. ACCE is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that empowers the Caribbean community through quarterly economic, civic, professional or social development workshops, scholarships for the youth, and cultural education series through music, dance and art. In addition to our educational components, each year, two signature events will be open to all.

Since 2012 the annual Caribbean Kite Festival has been held on the Saturday prior to Easter Sunday each year. This event is held at the Katy Park, 24927 Morton Road, Katy, Texas 77493 between the hours of 12pm and 9pm. The 6th Annual staging for the Caribbean Kite Festival will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Katy Park. During the Easter season the Caribbean Kite Festival is seen as a cultural exposition as well as a sentimental token to all Caribbean natives. It is planned with the intention of keeping our culture alive as well as teaching others about the meaning of our heritage. Every individual attending this festival is able to experience the culture.

Caribbean Student Organization The Caribbean Student Organization is a special interest group whose goal is to facilitate college level education for Caribbean students. This vision-filled entity saw its debut in the spring of 1993 when a few optimistic Caribbean students saw the possibility for other Caribbean students to study at Midwestern State University. CSO has been instrumental in creating an international housing program at Colony Park, and in leading the charge for the internationalization of the campus. After 15 years of growth, Caribbean Students continue to graduate at an unprecedented 95% rate on time, with more than 60% achieving honors and over 70% going on to earn advanced degrees.

Jamaica Youth Education Support (Jamaica YES) was founded in 2004 by five Jamaicans living in Dallas, Texas who came together to assist a school in Jamaica – St. Theresa Basic School in St. Mary parish. The school was in need of a breakfast program to help feed the 3-6 year olds who were coming to school hungry. JA YES launched a breakfast program, paid for the cook to prepare the meals and funded transportation so 3 teachers could obtain their Basic school certification.

In May of 1997, a group of Puerto Rican women met in Houston, Texas and established a community organization to gather Puerto Ricans in the Houston area. The purpose of the group was to promote our culture through social events and to provide financial assistance to Hispanic students. The group believed that empowering women to these tasks was going to make the difference in Texas. The efforts of this group of women gave birth to the Sociedad de Damas de Puerto Rico en Houston founded on September 16, 1997 as a non-profit organization in the State of Texas. In May of 2003, in order to meet the challenges of the new millennium, the organization transformed into the Sociedad de Puertorriqueños en Houston, Inc. (SPRH).
